Question 1

Is this invoice generator free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, completely free with no sign-up, no account required, and no watermarks on the PDF. Your business details are saved locally in your browser for next time.

Question 2

Can I use this for VAT invoices?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Toggle VAT registered at the top and each line item will show a VAT rate selector (20%, 5%, or 0%). The PDF will show your VAT number and a VAT breakdown — meeting HMRC's requirements for a simplified VAT invoice under £250, and a full VAT invoice above that.

Question 3

What should a UK invoice include?

Accepted Answer

HMRC requires: a unique invoice number, the invoice date, your business name and address, the client's name and address, a description of the goods or services, the amount charged, and (if VAT registered) your VAT number and the VAT amount. Limited companies should also include their company registration number.

Question 4

Does HMRC require a company registration number on invoices?

Accepted Answer

Not strictly, but it is strongly recommended for limited companies as it adds credibility and is required on your website and letter-headed paper. Sole traders and partnerships do not have a CRN.

Question 5

Do sole traders need to add VAT to invoices?

Accepted Answer

Only if you are VAT registered. VAT registration is compulsory once your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period (as of 2024/25). Below that threshold you can choose to register voluntarily, but you do not have to charge VAT.

Question 6

Is the PDF stored on your servers?

Accepted Answer

No. The PDF is generated entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded to any server. Your business details are saved only in your browser's local storage.
