Question 1

How much is Carer's Allowance in 2026/27?

Accepted Answer

Carer's Allowance is £86.45 per week in 2026/27, which works out to approximately £374.28 per month or £4,495.40 per year.

Question 2

How many hours do I need to care to qualify?

Accepted Answer

You must provide care for at least 35 hours per week to the person you look after. This does not need to be continuous — it is the total hours across the week that count.

Question 3

What is the earnings limit for Carer's Allowance?

Accepted Answer

You must earn no more than £204 per week net — after deducting income tax, National Insurance, half of any pension contributions, and allowable care expenses. If your net earnings exceed this threshold you will not qualify, even if you meet all other conditions.

Question 4

Does Carer's Allowance affect my other benefits?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You cannot receive Carer's Allowance at the same time as a State Pension or certain other benefits worth as much as or more than Carer's Allowance — this is called the overlapping benefits rule. However, you may still have an Underlying Entitlement, which can trigger a Carer Premium or Carer Addition on means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit or Housing Benefit.

Question 5

What benefit does the person I care for need to receive?

Accepted Answer

The person you care for must receive a qualifying disability benefit: Personal Independence Payment (PIP) daily living component at any rate, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) care component at middle or highest rate, Attendance Allowance, Armed Forces Independence Payment, or Constant Attendance Allowance.

Question 6

Is Carer's Allowance taxable?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Carer's Allowance counts as taxable income and must be declared if your total income exceeds the personal allowance (£12,570 for most people in 2026/27). At £86.45 per week (£4,495/year), the allowance is well below the personal allowance by itself, but if you also have part-time earnings or other income, the combined figure may become taxable. It is included in your Personal Tax Account and factored into your tax code by HMRC.

Question 7

Can I claim Carer's Allowance while receiving Universal Credit?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can claim both at the same time. However, Carer's Allowance is treated as unearned income by Universal Credit and reduces your UC payment pound-for-pound. The net benefit is usually small, but claiming Carer's Allowance unlocks the UC Carer Element, which adds up to £198.31 per month to your UC award in 2026/27. This means the total financial gain from combining both can still be meaningful — check your UC award notice to see if the Carer Element is being applied.
